Favourite quotes by person: Neil deGrasse Tyson

This one is keeper. Brilliant set of quotes.

P.S. The thing i hate about people who don’t believe in Science is that they enjoy all the comforts and conveniences of the modern day world. The thing they don’t ask is “How did all those come about?”

Our world is the way it is today because of Science and Technology, no two ways about it.

The iPhone comes with all the basics out of the box. And they are all perfectly serviceable.

Seriously. I could use the built in calendar for my scheduling and the notes app for the writing/capturing stuff. I don’t need Twitter or App.net. All of this extra stuff is “nice to have” not “need to have.” We would all do better to remember that.

Patrick Rhone

I pretty much follow the same philosophy. I don’t install third-party apps just for the fun of it.

Think like a proton in the nucleus of an atom. Always positive, though surrounded by apathy and negativity.
I love each and every one of you. You can do it, my little protons.

It’s a strong force, that holds us together.

HAH! What a great quote!

“The fundamental problem is that many products are created to be sold, not used”

Sori Yanagi

Hope the people in the tech media keep this quote in their heads before they file another meaningless piece from CES 2014.

“It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.”

“It turns out that what drives an economy is science, science, science, If you want to create jobs, spend on science. … It was right there for everyone to see with Tim Berners-Lee and the World Wide Web. Much of our postwar economic boom from 1945 to the present grew from quantum mechanics. We take it for granted when we take out our cell phone and charge the battery.”

Robert M. Solow of MIT, who developed a raft of equations to analyze economic growth. Mr. Solow won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1987 for his pioneering work.

“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”

Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.” - Marie Curie

There have been many measures taken to try to turn the educational system towards more control, more indoctrination, more vocational training, imposing a debt, which traps students and young people into a life of conformity… That’s the exact opposite of [what] traditionally comes out of The Enlightenment. And there’s a constant struggle between those. In the colleges, in the schools, do you train for passing tests, or do you train for creative inquiry?

[…]

Passing tests doesn’t begin to compare with searching and inquiring and pursuing topics that engage us and excite us. That’s far more significant than passing tests and, in fact, if that’s the kind of educational career you’re given the opportunity to pursue, you will remember what you discovered.

Lendary linguist and cognitive scientist Noam Chomsky, born 85 years ago today, on the purpose of education (via explore-blog)

Best thing i’ve read all week. Sadly, 99.9 percent of the students in India are trained and optimised for passing the “TESTS and EXAMS.”

They are just vehemently discouraged from pursing their passions that are outside the “NORM.” Education should be all about prodding kids towards finding a deeper and sapid learning experience.
